Wrist Tendinitis

Wrist Tendinitis

Wrist tendonitis is irritation or inflammation of one or more tendons in the wrist—the tough, fibrous bands that connect your forearm muscles to the bones of your hand. It’s most often an overuse/repetitive strain issue (typing, gripping sports, tool work), but it can also follow a sudden tweak or injury.

Symptoms

Symptoms usually show up near the irritated tendon and can include:

Pain: dull ache or sharper pain with gripping, twisting, lifting, or weight-bearing through the hand

Stiffness: reduced wrist/hand range of motion

Inflammation: mild swelling, warmth, or redness

Grinding/crackling: a creaky or “crunchy” sensation with movement (tendon friction)

Causes

Wrist tendonitis typically develops from micro-tears and friction when tendons are overloaded. Common triggers include:

Digital habits: prolonged typing, mouse use, texting

Sports: repetitive gripping/striking (tennis, golf, rowing, etc.)

Occupational strain: vibrating tools, assembly work, continuous manual labor

Age-related tendon changes: tendons can lose elasticity over time (often 40–60), making them more injury-prone

(Clinically, it may be described by location—thumb side like De Quervain’s, pinky side like ECU tendonitis, or palm-side flexor tendonitis.)

What to Try First

Most cases improve with conservative care:

Rest + splinting/bracing to reduce tendon load temporarily

Ice to calm irritation and swelling

OTC NSAIDs (like ibuprofen) as appropriate and directed by your provider

Cortisone injection may be considered for persistent cases (provider-directed)

How HyperWave Helps

HyperWave EMF-Focused Shockwave Therapy is a non-invasive, drug-free option often used for chronic or stubborn wrist tendonitis, especially when rest, bracing, ice, and therapy haven’t fully resolved the pain.

HyperWave may help by:

Supporting local circulation and tissue metabolism in irritated tendon tissue

Stimulating collagen activity and tendon remodeling to help the tendon become more resilient

Reducing pain by desensitizing local nerve endings and calming pain signaling

Helping patients tolerate and progress through rehab—where long-term tendon capacity is built

(Like most tendon care, it’s most effective when paired with an active rehab plan rather than used alone.)

What to Expect

Session length: typically 10–20 minutes

Plan: usually 3–6 sessions, often about a week apart

Sensation: tapping/pulsing; some describe an ache or “rubber band snap” feeling over the most irritated spot (intensity is adjustable)
