NEck strain

Neck Strain

A neck strain is an injury to the muscles or tendons in the neck that happens when these soft tissues are overstretched or lightly torn. It’s commonly triggered by sudden movement, repetitive overuse, or posture stress (think long hours at a screen). Most cases are straightforward, but they can be stubborn when the neck muscles stay tight and irritated.

Symptoms

Neck strain symptoms can range from mild to intense, including:

Localized neck pain (often a dull ache, sometimes sharper) that may spread into the shoulders or upper back

Stiffness and reduced ability to turn your head or look up/down

Muscle tightness and spasms

Tension headaches that start near the base of the skull

If symptoms include shooting pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness into the arms, it may indicate nerve involvement and should be evaluated

Causes

Common causes of neck strains include:

Poor posture / “tech neck” from prolonged phone or computer use

Sudden trauma (whiplash, sports collisions, falls)

Sleeping awkwardly (pillow/position issues leading to a stiff neck)

Physical strain from heavy lifting or repetitive movements that overload the neck/shoulder muscles

What to Try First

Most minor neck strains improve within a few days with conservative care:

Ice then heat: ice for the first 24–48 hours, then heat to relax tight muscles

Relative rest: avoid heavy lifting/intense activity, but keep gentle movement to prevent stiffness

OTC pain relief (as appropriate and directed by your provider)

Mobility + posture resets: light range-of-motion work and ergonomic changes (monitor height, phone position, pillow support)

How HyperWave Helps

HyperWave EMF-Focused Shockwave Therapy is a non-invasive, drug-free option often used when neck strain pain becomes persistent, keeps recurring, or is driven by tight trigger points and “stuck” soft tissue.

HyperWave can help by:

Supporting circulation and cellular repair in irritated neck and shoulder muscles

Helping reduce inflammation patterns and muscle guarding/spasm

Addressing adhesions/trigger points that can contribute to chronic tightness and limited mobility

Providing targeted support—especially helpful for myofascial neck/shoulder pain

What to Expect

Treatments are brief and non-invasive and patients often report less pain and greater mobility throughout their treatment plan.

Session time: usually 10–15 minutes

Sensation: tapping/vibratory pulses; tender points can feel intense but tolerable

Plan: often 3–5 sessions, spaced about 3–10 days apart

Downtime: typically none—most patients return to normal routine right after

Safety note: always confirm it’s appropriate for your specific condition with a qualified clinician—especially if symptoms suggest nerve involvement (radiating arm pain, numbness, tingling, weakness)
